The nature of Maria’s work is a weaving together of unexpected earthly elements as well as the artist’s driving thought. Incorporating something concrete, like coins, as well as the laborious process of putting them together, the work finds reflexivity in the act that is akin to “the hard work of extracting something from under the earth and discovering precious stone or coal.”

Slated to open on November 7, at Galleria Duemila, Forty Six Thousand Two Hundred Seventy Three is the artist’s most recent exhibition featuring her mixed media coin paintings. The title is in fact, the total number of coins that Maria has used in creating her pieces. To date, the coins have collectively amounted to 373, 264.
