Meet Pack Industry

Everyone’s A Band Aid

By MJ Cordova (@mjcordova08)

Almost Famous is my favorite movie and Penny Lane is an icon to me:  “We are not Groupies. Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are Band Aids,” she said. Toff’s World

Sounds Good

By Christopher de Venecia

Remember that scene from Sister Act 2 when Sister Mary Clarence, played by Whoopi Goldberg, asks her students what kind of music they listen to, and then one of ‘em, Sketch, says, “eclectic.” And then Frankie goes, “You plug your box in the wall and it gives you power?” Ahmal James corrects him, “Not electric, eclectic, stupid!” Well, they may as well have gone with electric. The movie musical, as much as it was eclectic, marrying gospel, hip-hop, folk, and soul, is also one of the most electrifying movies that ignited our generation (and put Lauryn Hill on the musical map). How can you forget the kids singing “Oh Happy Day,” and then finish off with “Joyful, Joyful” and win first place in the choir singing competition?

Point is: music has that kind of impact on people – that unmistakable, indelible mark that you can’t shake off or erase from the memory banks of your youth. Music is a part of us. And there’s not telling what song and/or …

The Concert Experience of a Lifetime

Manila, Philippines – “Warm, enthusiastic, it’s really hard to compare”. That’s how Grammy-winning instrumentalist Chris Botti sums up his impressions of the Filipino concert audience. The trumpeter and one-time session musician for big artists like Sting, Barbra Streisand and Paul Simon landed in Manila Sunday with an entourage of top-caliber musicians for a one-night concert at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila, sponsored by Manila’s newest lifestyle station, Radio High 105.9/fm.

Speaking at a lunch press conference at the Marriott Hotel, Botti also summed up his music and art in a few words. “I do have jazz and classical roots, but I’ve played with so many great pop musicians that my music has become a hybrid of all of those genres”. He also bemusedly recalled the time when he made it to the list of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 2004: “You see, you don’t apply for those kinds of things. And when I got the news, I got teased a lot by my bandmates”.

Later in the evening, …
