My Name Is Rachel Corrie

September 2nd, in Events, Theatre by Apryl Galang

After four years away from the Philippine theatre scene, acclaimed theatre actress Monique Wilson, stars in a controversial new play – “My Name is Rachel Corrie” , produced by the New Voice Company– at the Music Museum on September 3 and 4.

Why did a 23-year-old woman leave her comfortable American life to stand between a bulldozer and a Palestinian home? “My Name Is Rachel Corrie”, edited by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner, taken from the writings of Rachel Corrie herself, tells the story of her short life and sudden death from the words she left behind.

Rachel Corrie was an American peace activist from Olympia, Washington, who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer on 16 March 2003, while undertaking non-violent direct action to protect the home of a Palestinian family from demolition.

Shortly after her death, several of her e-mails home from Gaza were published in a number of media outlets, including in the Guardian UK.  British actor and director Alan Rickman was so moved by them that he approached the Royal Court Theatre about…

Banaag at Sikat: Isang Rock Musical

August 9th, in Events, Theatre by Apryl Galang

Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) continues to delight audiences with its 24th Theater Season (2010-2011) lineup of new plays that celebrate the National Artist as a modern Filipino IDOL. The season opens with Banaag at Sikat, Isang Rock Musical, a production that headlines the collaboration between National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera who wrote the libretto and National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal who designed the sets and costumes. This exciting new musical is based on Lope K. Santos’ groundbreaking literary opus of the same title about the breakup of the Filipino family and the rise of socialism in the country.

With music by Lucien Letaba, Banaag at Sikat, Isang Rock Musical universalizes its socialist theme by juxtaposing central, turn-of-the-century Philippines (1911) with music that’s very much today, Indie Rock. The production will be staged under the artistic vision of José Estrella, a critically acclaimed director whose works for TP include Orfeo sa Impiyerno (Orpheus Descending) and Ang Pokpok ng Ohio (The Whore from Ohio), among others.

Leading the cast are top-rate stage performers including Ayen Laurel, Franco…

International Child Actor Conquers PETA’s Stage

August 6th, in Events, Theatre by Apryl Galang

Prior to going to preparatory school, Martin delos Santos would already read the almanac, fairytales and bible stories and play pretend. When he was 3 years old, he would ask his mother to take him to the mall – not to buy clothes or toys, or watch a movie, but to do an acting stint on top of the mall’s empty stage. Now, barely in high school, he has acted in an international film (with Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams), attended the Berlin film festival, taped in Sweden and acted alongside the biggest names in Philippine Entertainment for the shows: Kamandag, Totoy Bato, Encantadia, Asero, Mga Mata ni Anghelita, Super Twins, All My Life, Magpakailanman and Jollitown.

Many directors have been amazed by his natural talent, his consuming passion and his remarkable memory, which help him learn scripts and cues in a breeze.

At age 10, Martin has the acting credits of a showbiz veteran, but this young actor has not stopped just yet. After conquering the big screen, television shows, commercials and talent searches, he…

PETA Cooks Up A Classic

August 1st, in Events, Theatre by Apryl Galang

After opening its 43rd Theater Season with a play about children, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) adds to its menu, a classic narrative that once again borrows inspiration from a deceptively simple subject.

From an enduring work of one of India’s most respected Renaissance figures, Rabindranath Tagore, comes a poignant adaptation that focuses on the inspiring story of an ailing child, Abel. Innocent, as he is unaware of what the loss of life means, Abel greets the world with loving and consuming passion through the lone window of his room and touches the lives of people passing outside his window.

Like a bittersweet tale cooked to perfection, Ang Post Office renders a contemporary flavor to the originally Bengali narrative The Post Office. Written and adapted by Palanca award-winning writer Rody Vera, the play transposes early 20th century rural Bengal into a modern day Filipino town.

Tagore’s characters are also spiced-up and given new life as they are given their own Filipino counterparts: a taho vendor for the dairyman, a PNP chief for the King’s watchman and a…
