Between Signs by Poklong Anading + Gary-Ross Pastrana
February 13th, in Events, Exhibit by Apryl Galang
Between Signs is the first two-man show of Poklong Anading and Gary-Ross Pastrana. It is a coming together of sorts, finding parallels between their artistic practices.
For more than 10 years, they have exhibited together in countless group shows both in Manila and abroad. Only with this show however, do they look into and articulate similar “themes, concerns and imagery”. Between Signs is a conceptual show that “embodies this semblance of correspondence or likeness, with a tacit attempt to blur the distinction between who-made-what.”
With photographs, mixed-media installations and video presentations, Anading and Pastrana – inspired by their artist residencies in Berlin and Bangkok, respectively- weave separate paths cut from the same cloth. Each work is a counterpart of the other’s.
“Take Fallen Map (by Anading), it relates to First Attempt at Social Sculpture or Breakingthe Fourth Wall (by Pastrana) in that they both represent fragments of the urban landscape. For Fallen Map, Anading went around the Metro and collected pieces of broken pavement and painted the flat side with colorful patterns derived from rags. On the other hand, Pastrana’s piece is an edible cake made to look like a broken slab of wall, complete with broken glass protectors.”
Similarly, Anading’s series of photographs of breadcrumbs, which are made to look like stellar constellations, correspond to Pastrana’s mixed-media installation. From Anading’s constellation, an astrological guide to the universe ironically made from simple crumbs, Pastrana extracts the idea of creating a planet made from breadcrumbs and adhesive. From Anading to Pastrana, from stardust to earth…
Between Signs is a project of two artists who read the same set of signs differently. Anading and Pastrana. “follow similar maps but still go in very distinct journeys”.
The exhibit is opening on February 16 and will be on view at Silverlens Gallery.
