DJ Qbert, the internationally accomplished Filipino-American turntablist and composer, recently went here for a homecoming.
But instead of his relatives, he was greeted by a handful of local turntablists and by the wild Manila party scene; and instead of his parents’ provinces, he spent his day at Time in Manila (in the afternoon) and at Hyve (in the evening)-all for one whole day of nothing but Red Bull Thre3style.
Red Bull Thre3style, for those of you asking, is a DJ set that involves three different musical genres. A standard set lasts for 15 minutes. Red Bull organized various Thre3style events to introduce the capital to its prestigious global DJ competition this year.
First on the list: Red Bull Thre3style Workshop in Manila. The San Francisco-born four-time winner of the DMC World DJ championships started the lecture with a demonstration of scratching techniques that progressively advanced in difficulty. Some drumming and beat juggling followed. Soon, he did a short routine and an open forum to cap off the afternoon.
When the sun bowed down and gave way to the night, the partyphiles occupied Hyve to get their taste of Red Bull Thre3style Showcase. The country’s top DJs each played a standard Thre3style set followed by DJ Qbert’s hour-long performance.
DJ Qbert certainly left the local turntablists inspired and the party-lovers craving for more. Thanks to him, everybody seems ready for a more exciting Red Bull Thre3style Qualifiers in the Philippines next year.
