Essential by Michelle Pérez

A showcase of Perez’s body of works that were accomplished from 2012 onwards. Her abstract works of lively colors is a series that, according to the artist, is an “opening of herself to the universe and collective consciousness.” That opening up resulted to a relinquishing of control, in which the artist allowed the source of all inspiration speak through her canvas. Her works are deep feelings that hint not of form, but of the immaterial universe. It is a series of works inspired by the musings of her heart and her universe, resulting in a controlled explosion of lively colors.

Pérez’s works in Essential are manifestations of a deep spirituality that is not necessarily of religion; of something significant or of a mystery that is begging to be discovered. Drawn to color and the “formless”, these being pure expression of the unbiased thoughts and perception of the mind and the eyes, she has a pure vision of her art. Her magnified Impressionist brushstrokes, and at times, the color field paintings of Mark Rothko, are connections to a divine being, a sacred place that is within us. This connection, she asserts, is easily achieved through these forms as these pulsate and transmit energy. The works represent as starting points for infinite possibilities.

She emphasizes this in her own words: “The value of art is to connect us with God, the universe, source, spirit and that sacred place inside ourselves. This can be reached when we transcend our thoughts, that constant brain chatter and enter a space beyond words and reason. I find that abstract art and vivid color help us reach that space because our brains are not dissecting, analyzing and judging the subject matter. We are immediately brought into a space beyond logic and reason and can better connect with our inner selves. My paintings are an invitation to enter that space.” She further affirms this with an Oscar Wilde quote: “Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand of ways.”
